Texas cedarwood oil is a naturally occurring essential oil derived from the wood of the Juniper Mexicana or Texas Cedar Tree. The oil is steam distilled from the wood or foliage of the tree and can range from yellowish to dark yellow. Texas cedarwood oil is quite vicious in texture and will deposit crystal upon standing. In many cases, this particular cedarwood oil put through a refinement process, then used in fragrances formulations, soaps, household spray, cleaners, and insecticides. It finds a home in the aromatherapy and personal care industries, as well.

Cedarwood is generally matched with other warm aromas to create deep, earthy, and enriching profiles. It is also often paired with spicy and sweet notes to develop masculine and sophisticated fragrances. Vanilla, patchouli, juniper, lavender, and sandalwood are just a few of the most popular partners for cedarwood. In home applications, cedarwood is used to enhance the feeling of calmness and connection to the earth while remaining very clean.

In aromatherapy, cedarwood oil is a grounding oil. Grounding means that it promotes emotional balance and stability in the user. Cedarwood oil also possesses purifying qualities, making it a popular addition to skin and hair care formulations, as it can treat acne and help to purify the scalp. It has shown promise in reducing hair loss in those who suffer from alopecia when mixed with a carrier and then massaged into the scalp. Cedarwood oil is also known to increase vitality and boost the respiratory system. When massaged into the chest before a workout, the oil can increase the time and intensity capabilities of an individual.

Fun Fact: In small amounts, cedarwood oil is used in microscope work as a clearing oil.
