Jasmine flowers are characterized by their fragrant, star-shaped blooms.  Jasminum Officinale, the most common species of the floral is native to Northern Iran, Western China, and the Himalayas.  With over 200 species, including colored and climbing varieties, jasmine is widely used in gardens and floral arrangements.

The uses of jasmine expand far past just display; the botanical can be used in food and drink, medicinals, and perfumery.  Dried jasmine flowers can be crushed and steeped in hot water to make tea, a practice popularized in China and the Middle East.  The fresh flowers can be processed to make essential oils to be used for fragrance applications.  In the case of Vigon’s Jasmine Absolute, the essential oils from the flower are distilled using a two step process to create an ultra pure extract.

Jasmine’s distinct fresh, floral aroma has made it an essential ingredient in the fragrance industry.  Because jasmine is such a costly ingredient, it is often adulterated or synthetic extracts are used.  Thus, fragrances that use authentic jasmine are often expensive; and highly coveted.  Household names in perfumery that feature jasmine in top scents include Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Jo Malone.

Fun Fact: jasmine absolute is often referred to as the “King of Oils” due to it’s pristine quality and high cost
