Cypress is a conifer tree originating from Asia Minor. It can reach about 30 meters tall and will live for a couple of hundreds of years. Cypress growth now spreads across the Mediterranean and has become its emblematic tree. The tops of Cypress trees are only harvested once every 4 to 5 years, allowing the tree to continue its growth with minimal interruption.

The essential oil is then steam distilled from the twigs, stems, and leaves of the cut pieces. The oil boasts an evergreen aroma with a balsamic twist and is often the middle note in men’s fragrances. However, its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties make it a popular addition to skin and hair care formulations, as well. Typically cypress is blended with clean citrus scents like lemon or deeper and more sensual aromas like sandalwood and lavender.

In aromatherapy applications, cypress oil can promote vitality and boost energy within the user. The clean and earthy scent has the unique effect of being both grounding and invigorating and is an equally powerful mood booster when used in a diffuser and topically. For those looking for a motivational boost when running, applying cypress oil to the legs just before beginning a workout causes an increase of blood flow. It provides a stimulating sensation and makes a long run more enjoyable. When used in skincare applications, cypress oil can reduce oil production on the face while maintaining a healthy glow.

Fun Fact: Cypress trees have been the subject of many famous artists including, most notably, Vincent Van Gogh
