Cinnamon, a precious aromatic bark, is a pleasant spice, which conveys feelings of warmth and comfort.  It is a quintessential flavor in American holiday meals and baked goods, and extremely popular in Mexican cuisine.  Its essential oil is formulated in high-end perfumes such as Yves Saint Laurent Opium, Dyptique L’Eau, and Dior Dolce Vita.

The only “true” variety of cinnamon is Ceylon cinnamon, or Cinnamomum Verum trees, native to Sri Lanka.  Cinnamon trees are commercially grown in large plantations.  Their  bark is first harvested when trees reach three years of age.  After harvest, the bark is painstakingly sliced by hand off the slender trunks and set out to dry in well ventilated warehouses.  This slow drying process causes the bark to curl into cinnamon’s iconic shape.

Vigon’s Cinnamon Bark Oil 100% Pure is extracted by performing a steam distillation on pulverized cinnamon bark.  Pressurized steam releases the naturally-occurring aroma compounds of  the cinnamon bark and allows them to evaporate with the steam.  Expertise and experience is essential for this process- the steam must be just the right temperature; so as to not damage the aroma chemicals. The steam then passes through a cooling chamber; which condenses the steam to water.  Since essential oil is less dense than water, the fragrant oil floats to the top of the chamber and can then be lightly skimmed off.

In fragrance formulation, cinnamon bark oil adds warmth, spice, sweetness and gourmand notes. Gourmand scents are characterized by notes of vanilla, honey, and tonka bean to create a sultry, feminine scent.  Cinnamon brightens such formulations, and also adds rich natural depth to synthetic formulas.

In flavors, cinnamon bark oil complements other cinnamon ingredients (oleoresins, cinnamic aldehyde, etc…) to add a rich, spicy, cinnamon aroma to popular manufactured foods like cereals, bakery goods, confectioneries, and even savory sauces.  In beverage, cinnamon bark oil is a staple of cola flavors.

Popular in aromatherapy, cinnamon bark oil possesses anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, and can stimulate hair growth when massaged on the scalp.  Other virtues include blood circulation benefits, and immune system support.  Cinnamon bark oil was also found to be a stimulant in moments of fatigue and comforting in times of anxiety.
