The overarching term Geranium oil is often used to describe a variety of oils harvested from plant species in the Pelargonium genus. These plants tend to all have a similar shrub-like look about them, with flowers ranging from solid white or pale pink, to white with pink stripes. While the resulting oils are very similar in aroma and look, some important distinctions are recognized by perfumers in specific.

Geranium oil from China and Egypt are the most comparable of the different types, with their aromas being remarkably similar. They come from a hairy perennial shrub with pointed leaves and pinkish/white flowers. China is the largest producer in the world of geranium oil, with most production concentrated in the Yunnan Provence. It is an easily grown little plant that is sometimes harvested upwards of 4 times a year. Chinese Geranium Oil is comprised of about 40% citronellol and 15% citronellyl formate, creating a high-intensity top note of fresh Geranium and rose but lacking much of a middle or base note.

The Geranium Oil Bourbon is understood to be the finest out of the geranium options. Native to the Island of Reunion and Madagascar, this particular species boasts a beautifully delicate and rosy essential oil. The plant is also a shrub and carries its essential oil in its sharp hairy leaves. It is planted as a perennial crop across the islands and is manually harvest several times between October and April. This oil lends itself beautifully to more luxurious and superior formulations.

Due to its many health benefits and gently uplifting sweet aroma, Geranium Oil is commonly used in the Aromatherapy world as well. Once used by the Egyptians for its ability to promote healthy skin, treat acne, and reduce inflammations, Geranium is a popular addition to a variety of uniquely kid-friendly blends.

Fun Fact: Some studies show Geranium Oil demonstrates anti-neuroinflammatory effects, that could possibly be used to treat/ prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the future
