Onion is a flavor that is either loved or hated. Often lumped together under the blanket term of onion, there are a variety of onion types, each with a unique aroma and flavor profile. What leads to this variety is where in the world, the onion in question is being grown.

The Mexican or white onion, grown in Mexico, is known for its golden color and mild aroma and flavor. A staple in Central and South American cooking, they can also be known as “Spanish Onions.” These give off a particularly sweet taste when sauteed.

While the typical culinary uses of onion are known and understood throughout many cultures, there are several other applications in aromatherapy and even the beauty industry.

For those willing to brave the pungent smell given off by onion oil, it has many uses when applied topically. The antiseptic and antibacterial properties make onion oil helpful when cleaning wounds or treating painful ear or toothaches. It is also known to treat acne and remove warts from the skin.
