Tangerine is an orange citrus fruit that is typically smaller and less rounded than the typical orange. The taste is more potent than orange but significantly sweeter and less sour. Their harvest takes place from Autumn, through the winter, to spring when used as produce, and typically are peeled and eaten by hand. Originating in China, Tangerines are now grown all over America, especially in the United States. To create the best quality and most potent oil, however, tangerines are harvested right before they are fully mature and cold-pressed. This is due to the fact that fully matured and ripened tangerine fruit separates too quickly from the peel, resulting in a more inferior quality oil.

The resulting oil from a successful harvest has a warm, fresh, citrusy aroma with the main components being a-pinene, myrcene, limonene, as well as many more. Tangerine oil is extremely versatile and is utilized throughout the flavor, fragrance, personal care, cleaning, and aromatherapy industries.

For flavoring, tangerine oil is added to create a sweet and citrusy punch, especially in candies and beverages. In fragrance, the oil is added to formulations in need of a citrus note that is more candy-like, as orange can add a bitter note that tangerine does not have. In personal care, cosmetics, and skin-care, tangerine oil is added to formulations to cleanse and brighten skin gently. It’s antiseptic, and antifungal qualities make it a great addition to treat acne and inflammation. These two qualities also make it a popular choice for cleaning agents, plus the bright scent can have calming and uplifting effects on the user, aiding in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. When used in therapeutic methods, tangerine oil is an antispasmodic and can relax muscles and cramps, while promoting healthy and restful sleep in the user.

Fun Fact: Tangerine oil is the signature ingredient of several orange liqueurs.
